The Opportunity House in Pine Bluff officially reopened October 23, unveiling a revitalized facility designed to better serve the city’s unhoused population. First opened last year as a part-time day room, the upgraded center will now operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week providing meals and wraparound services including mental health support, substance abuse treatment and veteran assistance.

Mayor Vivian Flowers emphasized the importance of the facility’s role in addressing homelessness. “We know the need is great,” Flowers said. “The unhoused population often goes unseen, hiding in places that are uninhabitable. This facility gives us a chance to reach them and offer real help.”

The reopening was made possible through a combination of grants and community support. A $250,000 grant from Lowe’s was instrumental in making the building safe and livable in time for its initial opening in April 2024. Additional funding from United Way and other sources is helping the city fully staff and sustain the program.

Christopher Taylor, former associate director of Opportunity House, noted the center’s regional impact. “Homelessness doesn’t know borders,” Taylor said. “This place serves people from all locations and helps get them back on their feet.”

Taylor also acknowledged the economic pressures many face. “We’re living in a time when people are barely making it. Services like this are essential for those most vulnerable.”

The reopening event drew staff, volunteers and community members, all united in support of the mission. “I’m proud of everyone who came out,” Taylor added. “But most of all, I thank the participants. Without their desire to do better, this wouldn’t exist.”
