The Arkansas Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA Arkansas) is proud to announce that its longstanding Planner of the Year Award has been renamed the Jim von Tungeln Award, recognizing one of the most influential and respected planning professionals in Arkansas history.
The decision reflects von Tungeln’s extraordinary career spanning more than five decades and his lasting impact on communities, local governments and the planning profession throughout Arkansas. During his career, he directed planning projects in more than 75 Arkansas cities and provided guidance and technical assistance to the majority of the state’s 500 municipalities. His work has shaped local policy, influenced Arkansas planning law and helped communities implement plans that continue to improve the quality of life for residents across the state.
Known by many as “the planner’s planner,” von Tungeln built an impeccable reputation through his commitment to thoughtful, practical planning and public service. Beyond individual projects, von Tungeln’s greatest contribution may be his influence on generations of planners. Through his work with the Arkansas Municipal League, his leadership within the profession and his willingness to mentor others, he helped elevate the practice of planning across Arkansas.
