Finance & Administrative Services Director

The town of Crested Butte, Co., is seeking a finance and administrative services director for this charming, small mountain town known for its stunning natural beauty and year-round outdoor recreation. Litigation Counsel for the Arkansas Municipal League

Residency Requirement: Must reside within an Arkansas city or incorporated town.

Position Summary

The Municipal Legal Defense Program is expanding and has an opening for a dedicated and experienced litigation attorney to join the team. This role is responsible for defending lawsuits submitted by Arkansas cities, city officials and city employees, and providing legal counsel on a wide range of municipal matters and issues. The litigation counsel will work under the direction of the MLDP general counsel and perform other duties as assigned.


Key Responsibilities

  • Defend lawsuits involving § 1983 claims, ACRA claims, employment law (ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FLSA, Title VII), state tort claims, land use, FOIA, and illegal exaction claims.
  • Manage caseload throughout various stages of litigation, with a focus on filing dispositive motions and briefs based on current statute and precedent.
  • Attend client meetings and city council/board meetings.
  • Investigate claims, interview witnesses and gather documents.
  • Conduct and defend depositions, including client and witness preparation meetings.
  • Facilitate and attend settlement conferences and mediations; negotiate and finalize settlements.
  • Represent clients in court hearings, trials, appeals and oral arguments at all levels, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • Advise municipal clients on legal matters to prevent lawsuits and assist with policy and training development.
  • Manage daily tasks of paralegal and law clerk(s).
  • Analyze legal trends and stay updated on current case law.
  • Opportunities to: create and deliver presentations on relevant municipal issues to local, state and national audiences; foster relationships between AML and other organizations/agencies; assist with legislative advocacy; and support city attorneys across the state.


Required Skills

  • Excellent research and brief writing skills.

  • Able to handle stressful, conflict situations while maintaining decorum.

Qualifications

  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in Arkansas; relevant federal court admissions.
  • Must be able to travel in-state, including occasional overnight stays.

Litigation Paralegal for the Arkansas Municipal League

Position Summary

The Municipal Legal Defense Program is expanding and has an opening for a dedicated and experienced litigation paralegal to join the team. This position will assist the assigned MLDP litigation attorney by drafting federal and state court pleadings and discovery, gathering documents, investigating facts, scheduling meetings/depositions, updating and maintaining the attorney’s calendar, and performing other duties as assigned.


Key Responsibilities

  • Draft and file legal documents such as briefs, motions, appeals, contracts and other legal documents and pleadings for review, approval and use by counsel.
  • Gather and investigate factual evidence for initial client meetings, discovery, motion and trial preparation.
  • Draft and review routine written discovery requests and responses.
  • Perform clerical duties such as scheduling appointments/depositions/meetings; maintaining the attorney’s calendar, saving, redacting, Bates-stamping, filing, and mailing documents; providing updates or case information to clients; creating physical case files, folders and binders as necessary; drafting routine correspondence; reading, routing and responding to incoming mail; typing and/or transcribing documents such as pro se discovery requests; and compiling and submitting expense reports for various defense expenses.
  • Perform routine acquisition and organization of information from various private and public entities such as courts, EEOC, CLEST, DWS, SSA, DHS, Arkansas Office of Driver Services, healthcare providers, educational facilities, various employers, law enforcement agencies and others.
  • Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, courts, court reporters and other entities regarding scheduling, discovery, appeals, expert witnesses and other issues.
  • Attend client meetings, hearings, depositions and trials as needed.
  • Assist in all aspects of preparation for trials and appeals.

 

Required Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 (OneDrive, SharePoint, CoPilot, Word, Lists/Excel, Outlook, Teams), Westlaw, Westlaw AI- CoCounsel, Adobe Reader/DC, WebEx, and other related software.
  • Strong organization and time management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, efficiently and in a timely manner with AML staff, AML program members, city officials and employees, opposing counsel, co-counsel, and members of the legal and business communities both verbally and in writing.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum three years of experience as a litigation paralegal.
  • A paralegal certification is preferred but not required.
